New Community Solar Projects Slated For Molokai Could Lower Bills by Paula Dobbyn for Honolulu Civil Beat 

With some of the highest energy bills in the state, around 1500 families on Molokai could see some bill relief pending two solar projects from Hawaiian Electric and Hoʻāhu Energy Cooperative are working to get solar for residents. Pending approval from the PUC, this will be the state’s first (we hope of many!) community owned and designed solar project.

While the United States’ carbon emissions have increased by 1.3% in 2022 (👎), there is some hope -  not only is this lower than the 6.2% emissions surge in 2021, there is also an increase in renewable energy nationwide. Wind and solar is taking over energy production from coal, and the Inflation Reduction Act could help emissions fall even more.

Although the world needs to move away from fossil fuel projects, the United Kingdom went the other way as the government “approved British taxpayer support for a huge gas project in Mozambique and gave planning permission for a new English coal mine.” This decision is not only a concern for the environment, but for the people of Mozambique - where the gas industry has destroyed natural resources, displaced communities and worsened armed conflict.
