March Fund Appeals are on their way—here’s a sneak peek

Aloha,

Our movement is stronger than ever, and the fight for a sustainable climate future rages on.

Despite attempts at the federal, state and local levels to slam the brakes on progress, we continue to come together to demand the clean air, clean water and a clean and just energy system that Hawaiʻi deserves.

And no matter which way big polluters and their puppet politicians find to fight progress, we’ll match them. In the streets, in the courtroom and in the legislature. My favorite thing about being part of the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi is that we do it all.

In another era of divided federal government, local action here in Hawaiʻi is more important than ever. Here’s some of the things the Hawaiʻi Chapter is working on this year:

  • Legislative priorities and CapitolWatch: We are taking hard stances against the systems that are polluting Hawaiʻi’s waters and lands, and fighting for the people of Hawaiʻi.

  • Shutting Down Red Hill: We are living through a catastrophe. The only thing we can do to stop it from getting worse is stick together and never give up. We will continue working with allies to organize our communities to strengthen our influence to make the Defense Department do the right thing: drain the tanks and clean up the pollution.

  • Decolonizing climate change: We recognize the importance of Indigenous-led climate justice in the forefront of our work, and will continue to support and uplift Kānaka voices and traditional ways of living in the fight against the climate crisis.

But to change everything, we need everyone. This movement is people-powered and people-funded. While our big polluter opponents may have overstuffed war chests, our movement is different. People are the beating heart of the Sierra Club. People like you. That’s why today, I’m asking for your support – so together, we can keep our movement growing.

We know that with growing support for sustainable solutions we can achieve victories that reduce pollution and improve our quality of life, making us all healthier, happier and more resilient. And we will win because we always put people above profit.

Every day, the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi is called upon to defend the right to clean air, clean water and the recreation, health and prosperity that come with them. Today, I’m asking you to rise to that challenge and make a gift to honor our movement.

We continue to feel the impacts of climate inaction, like ignoring the impacts of extreme water pollution. If we come together, we can do the work to protect what we love, give much-needed attention to vulnerable communities, and stabilize our climate.

The seas may be rising, but so are we! Thank you for your support.

Keep on keeping on,

Marti Townsend
Oʻahu Group Executive Committee Member, Former Chapter Director

P.S. Global inaction has delivered climate impacts to Hawaiʻi – but local action is how we fight back. When you give to the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi, 100 percent of your donation stays in our islands so we can build the movement and win.
