Healthy watersheds need native plant restoration mauka to makai. Up mauka, Hawaiʻi’s tree cover and native forests are vital to our islands’ drinking water security. The native plants and trees that make up Hawaiʻi’s native forests capture rain and cloud moisture, absorbing water that then seeps into the ground and replenishes the groundwater aquifers that supply Hawaiʻi’s drinking water. At sea level, native plants can help stop erosion and protect coastal areas from storm surges and flooding. Planting native plants in your yard, instead of introduced species or ornamentals, can cut down on water usage and help stop the further spread of invasive species.
That’s where you come in! Come by KEY Project on Saturday, October 15 starting at 9am to grab a free native plant on us and help restore healthy watersheds mauka to makai.
Our tree experts will be there to help you pick the right plant for your space. We’ll even have plant species suited for pots that can help bring native flora and greenery to your apartment or condo.
