AES Greenhouse Gas Emissions

In 2007, the state legislature required that the Department of Health enact rules requiring a reduction in the state’s greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels.

Then in 2019, AES Hawaiʻi, which burns coal at its power plant in Kapolei, Oʻahu actually proposed to increase its emissions. The Department of Health sat on AES’ application.

The Sierra Club sued over the Department of Health’s inaction. As a result, AES has now pledged to decrease its emissions by 16% this year.
