In alignment with our word of the month and article on decolonization, here are two virtual panels recently held during the week of the Hawaiʻi Energy Conference, which is historically dominated by corporate industry representatives. These panels are meant to balance out the conversation with meaningful perspectives from kānaka maoli practitioners and grassroots leaders who will describe their vision and work to create a culturally-grounded, resilient, democratic, and localized energy future for Hawaiʻi.

  • Ahupuaʻa Energy Systems - Learn about how Hawaiian systems thinking can inform a just and equitable energy future with Walter Ritte- founder of ʻĀina Momona, Eric Enos- founder of Kaʻala Farms, and Maui Council Vice-Chair Keani Rawlins-Fernandez. Moderated by Rachel James- Staff attorney for the Hawaiʻi Public Utilities Commission.

  • Building Local Power Hear from community leaders as they share their journey from energy oppression to energy sovereignty through community-owned energy projects with Lori Buchanan from Hoʻāhu Energy Cooperative Molokaʻi, Kapua Keliʻikoa-Kamai-Waiʻanae Valley Homestead resident, Kamalani Keliʻiikuli of Kahuku Community Association, and Ali Andrews- founder of Shake Energy Collaborative. Moderated by Sebastien Selarque- Research Assistant at Hawaiʻi Natural Energy Institute and grad student at the UH Mānoa Urban and Regional Planning.

Both panels were originally streamed live on Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi’s Facebook page
