More art activism to shut down Red Hill

@ladymisskai tattoo fundraiser

In addition to the Keiki Arts March, throughout December, Hawaiʻi artists, musicians and creative minds continued to contribute their talents to the Shut Down Red Hill Campaign. This includes:

A second tattoo fundraiser by Kai Smart, a.k.a. @ladymisskai, who held another Flash Fundraiser day to raise funds for the Red Hill campaign.  This time, participants could select their tattoo of choice from a series of young kalo plant filigrees, with all proceeds donated to the Oʻahu Water Protectors and Shut Down Red Hill Mutual Aid. Mahalo nui to Kai and all who took part in this creative effort to support the cause!

Mylo Choy cartoon

A Red Hill political cartoon by Mylo Choy, which has been circulating at Red Hill events throughout December. Download a copy of the cartoon here and feel free to share it with your friends and networks.

An amazing track, “Bad Situation,” by musician James Awana, a.k.a. J Ragga Muzik, and featuring Big Every Time, which premiered on KKCR Kaua‘i Community Radio and which is now airing on radio stations in Guåhan and throughout Hawai‘i. Listen to the track – with lyrics focused on the root causes of the Red Hill crisis – here, and be sure to request that it be played on your local radio station.

Yet another contribution of beautiful, handcrafted scarves, jackets, quilts and more made from repurposed vintage kimono, by textile artists Elizabeth Kent of Vested Interest Hawai‘i and Ellen Godbey Carson. New monthly and one-time donors through November and early December were able to select a one-of-a-kind gift thanks to the incredible generosity of Elizabeth and Ellen, who have been dedicated supporters of our Red Hill Campaign.

Finally, Heather and Rachael with Aloha Collection included the Sierra Club of Hawai‘i in the Aloha Collection’s 5% giveback program, which donates a portion of the revenues generated from their immensely popular, locally designed splash-proof travel bags and accessories to mālama ʻāina organizations across Hawaiʻi. Their inclusion of the Sierra Club will support our work to Shut Down Red Hill, and protect ʻāina and wai throughout the islands.

If you are an artist who contributed or would like to contribute your talents to the Red Hill campaign, please reach out to us at hawaii.chapter@sierraclub.org, and we will happy to feature you in our next Mālama Monthly.
