Celebrate niu with us this #NiuNovember

We are excited to announce #NiuNovember, a month-long virtual celebration of all things niu—highlighting its cultural roots, environmental importance, and the many benefits it provides here in Hawaiʻi.

But it’s not all celebration—as you know, niu is facing a serious threat from the coconut rhinoceros beetle, an invasive pest that endangers our niu future. This beetle affects not only food security and resilience, but also our cultural identity and economy. During Niu November, we’ll share tips and resources to help you identify, manage, and mitigate this pest, so we can work together to protect niu for future generations.

Celebrate with us and enjoy the resources we share on our Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and website.

The main event of this month’s celebrations is our niu photo contest, to capture and honor the beauty and resources of the coconut tree. This year’s theme is “It’s Niu or Never.” Each month, we lose more niu across Oʻahu, while the coconut rhinoceros beetle continues to spread to Kauaʻi and threatens Hawaiʻi Island and Maui. Let’s celebrate and preserve the beauty of our niu now, before it’s too late.
