With Your Support, Hope Endures Through Uncertainty—2024 Year End Giving

The Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi’s 2024 Year End fundraising letters should be hitting your mailboxes any day now. This year’s letter from our deputy director, Kirsten Kagimoto, shares heartfelt reflections on our 2024 accomplishments, bold plans for 2025, and a deeply personal call to action to protect Hawaiʻi for future generations.

Please check your mail or read the letter below and make the most generous gift you are able to before the year’s end. 100% of your donation will stay in the islands and go straight to our grassroots work to protect Hawaiʻi’s ʻāina, wai, and communities, ensuring a livable and equitable future for generations to come.

Aloha,

To say I am proud doesn’t begin to capture how I feel.

Over my eight years with the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi, I’ve watched this organization grow alongside my own journey as a person, environmental advocate, and now, a mother. Your unwavering support has been a beacon of hope, a testament to the positive change we can create together, even in the face of growing challenges. Together, we have achieved more than I could have ever imagined.

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible work we’ve accomplished together—work that wouldn’t have been possible without your steadfast support. I’m reminded of some of our key achievements, including:

  • Defending the integrity of our judiciary and East Maui streams, when the state submitted false claims to the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court, in an attempt to leverage the tragic Lāhainā fires to allow Alexander & Baldwin to divert more water.

  • Launching our inaugural cohort of ʻōpio leaders through our new Organizing for Change program, equipping the next generation with the knowledge and tools they need to advocate for their communities and future.

  • Ending the Green Administration’s unconstitutional “emergency proclamation” on housing, once and for all, that exploited Hawaiʻi’s housing crisis to attack laws protecting our environment, Native Hawaiian rights, iwi kūpuna, and food security.

As I look ahead to 2025, the stakes have never been higher. The climate crisis, rampant development, and loss of biodiversity continue to threaten our islands, all demanding immediate action. That’s why the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi has set ambitious goals for the coming year, and we’re counting on you to help reach them. In 2025, we will build upon last year’s achievements, as well as aim to:

  • Protect Hawaiʻi’s water future by ensuring equitable and sustainable water management practices and seeing through the remediation of the land and waters surrounding the Red Hill fuel facility.

  • Strengthen efforts to protect vital crops, like niu and kalo, from the devastation of invasive pests like the coconut rhinoceros beetle and little fire ant, which are critical to our food security and culture.

  • Support Lāhainā’s rebuilding efforts by backing community-led initiatives, amplifying local voices, and holding decision-makers accountable to the people's needs.

Your year-end gift will help us continue fighting for the future of Hawai‘i—protecting our ʻāina, wai, and keiki to kūpuna from the threats we face. Will you join us in making these goals a reality by making a special year-end gift by our December 31 deadline?

As a mother, this work has taken on even greater significance for me. Every day, I think about the kind of world I want to pass on to my daughter. Like you, I want her to have a fighting chance at a livable, equitable future—one where she can experience the same beauty and wonder that we have been so fortunate to enjoy. Your generosity powers this movement, and every dollar you give ensures that we can keep pushing forward for her generation and the ones that follow.

As we turn the page on 2024, I am filled with renewed hope for our future. Together, we can make 2025 a year of profound impact and meaningful change.

Mahalo nui,

Kirsten Kagimoto
Deputy Director
Sierra Club of Hawai‘i

P.S. The help you provide today gives us hope for a better tomorrow. Please give as generously as you can by our December 31st deadline – 100% of your gift stays in Hawaiʻi!
