Join us for a FREE screening of Dark Waters this Friday
by Madison Owens, Chapter Extern | Reading time: 2.5 minutes
You are invited to join us THIS FRIDAY, August 4 from 5-9pm at the Church of the Crossroads for a FREE screening of Dark Waters, a Blockbuster film that tells one community’s story of their fight to remediate the contamination of forever chemicals in their drinking water. In addition to the film, there will be educational booths by local environmental organizations, donation-based food, and a community discussion on the status of Red Hill, PFAS in Hawaiʻi and more. Please RSVP here by tomorrow, Wednesday, August 2.
With the defueling of the Red Hill tanks just around the corner, we remain as committed as ever to securing a clean drinking water future for Oʻahu and our island community—including ensuring our water is free of forever chemicals like Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
As the harmful impacts of PFAS continue to unravel and affect our ῾āina and wai, we stand with communities to demand more stringent standards so that future generations can rely on land and water free from forever chemicals.
Big mahalo to our co-sponsors Church of the Crossroads, Hawaiʻi Alliance for Progressive Action, Hawaiʻi Interfaith Power and Light, Hawaiʻi Youth Climate Coalition, Mohala Farms, Honolulu Board of Water Supply and the Shut Down Red Hill Coalition to helping make this free community event happen.
Event details:
Parking: Free at the Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Avenue, Honolulu HI, 96826. Park near the front entrance, entering from Bingham Street.
Food: Food will be served around 5:30pm and we encourage you to bring your own plates and utensils, as well as your own water bottle, to help us minimize waste. The food for this event has been graciously provided by Mohala Farms. Donations to Mohala Farms will be accepted to help them continue their work.
Educational booths: The Hawaiʻi Alliance for Progressive Action, Shut Down Red Hill Coalition, Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Root Cause Remedies Podcast, Mohala Farms, and the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi will be present at the event sharing about what they do and how you can get involved.
Bring ti leaves: You may have heard, we are on a mission to make a lei the size of a Red Hill tank to help demonstrate the monstrous size of each tank. If you have access to ti to contribute to the lei, please bring it with you on Friday! You can either bring deboned and frozen leaves that we can weave that night while watching the movie or bring whole fresh leaves that we can process and freeze for the next event.
Feel free to share this event with family and friends or any other organizations that you think may like to join us! If you are interested, or know someone who might be interested in volunteering at the event, please contact Madison Owens at msowens@hawaii.edu.
Please RSVP here for the event by 11:59pm TONIGHT, Wednesday, August 2. We look forward to seeing you THIS FRIDAY, August 4 from 5-9pm!
