Free native plants for Native Plant Month

By Kirsten Kagimoto, Communications Manager | Reading time: 1.5 minutes

In celebration of Native Plant Month and Earth Month, we are giving away *free* native plants! What better way to celebrate April than by adopting a new native plant for your home, school, or office?

Sierra Club Native Plant Giveaway
Sunday, April 7, 9am-12pm (or until we run out of plants)
Waialua Elementary School parking lot behind the cafeteria,
67-020 Waialua Beach Rd, Waialua, HI 96791
Everyone is welcome, no matter how green your thumb is

We will have a variety of native plants well suited for the north shore, as well as species that will thrive in pots for small spaces. Our super volunteer plant experts will be on hand to help you pick the right plant for you! Everyone will receive a booklet with best practices for planting, plant care, and species information. Plants will be first come, first served while supplies last, with a one plant per household limit. Bonus: Everyone that comes to pick up a plant will be entered to win Patagonia and Sierra Club gear!

At the event we will also have materials from the Oʻahu Invasive Species Committee on little fire ants and other invasive species, as well as little fire ant testing kits for you to test your home. All plants for distribution will be tested for little fire ants prior to the event.

April has been designated as Native Plant Month in Hawaiʻi as a way to recognize the importance of native species and support the protection and cultivation of native, threatened, and endangered plant species of Hawaiʻi. The restoration of native species and ecosystems play a key role in Hawaiʻi’s climate resiliency, cultural integrity, and economy. Our native plant giveaways are part of our Virtual Tree Planting Program, which has distributed over 1,300 plants to date. We are excited to be a part of this work and we hope you will join us!

Mark your calendars, spread the word, and get ready to grab yourself a new native plant on Sunday, April 7!
